The Nazi Germany lost. In a few weeks, it will capitulate. A company of French soldiers, led by Captain Louyre occupies an important rural township in the South of the country. The mess is at its peak - portraits of Hitler have not yet been won - and the rights and duties of each remain vague. "I don't know what I am responsible for, explains Louyre to those who reproach him to put his nose in the shameful secrets of the vanquished." I am the butte of a province flooded bombing. I am an occupying force to the undefined powers to this day, which makes me think, at least for the moment, they are unlimited.
These powers, Louyre account use to resolve a Darkover case revolving around a young girl of fifteen, Maria Richter, that he has discovered, hungry and shivering cold in an isolated farm not far from the remains charred corpse, poorly hidden in a barn under a pile of rags. Who is this man and why is he dead ask the French soldiers. The a-t-elle small murdered Has there been cannibalism

Captain Louyre then starts a real police investigation. Why the father of Maria, Hans Richter, a large corner, man of pious and assiduous cultivator in the choir of the Cathedral, Member of the National Socialist Party (although little motivated in reality by the political thing), he left on the eastern front by abandoning his daughter on the farm Is it still alive As the mother of Maria, she would be, according to the small, installed in the city in a nursing home.
A case of State
As it progresses in its investigation, the captain understands that little Maria is the innocent heads of an affair of State which exceeds. He acquired the conviction when the priest of the parish, the ambiguous father Wurtz, asks with a little too much insistence to leave the small orphaned "to the hand in the way of our Lord Jesus Christ". Louyre includes whereas it must urgently take Maria under his protection. Especially now that he has discovered the existence of letters from the front of the East by the father of the child, the letters on which many people would like, apparently, to hand.
The success of the novel by Marc Dugain, known talent ("The House of officers", "The curse of Edgar", "Ordinary execution"), is the manner in which he weaves the sons of the history and those of the great. Especially when the ultimate face-to-face meeting between Dr. Halfinger Louyre, which he explains, without a shadow of a remorse, the essence of the nazi movement: "Few men in the history of humanity have had this feeling of fullness that was ours." The feeling of living a great collective ambition, you do not know what it is, is up in the morning by a vision of the world rather than allegiance to mediocrity and the Legion of its promoters.
But the novel would not have this depth without the personality out of the ordinary of the captain Louyre. Aged thirty-five years, this astronomer by profession, committed in the war in a manner strangely hard - "a daunting adventure" which could not be absent-, defines himself as a "Spectator fun existence." With the small Maria, whose mystical visions that "all of this eventually as a fairy tale" because God sleep, he knows what I did for him!", they are a couple unlikely, complex and moving, thrown into the vortex of history and forever linked.
